Flavours of blackberries, brown sugar and red currant are jammed into this fruity and sweet coffee, with an unmistakable freshness that Kenyan coffee is known for.

The coffee is produced by Long Miles Coffee which is run by Ben & Kristy Carlson. At the roastery, we simply call them "Long Miles". We have worked closely with them since 2014 and know each other very well now. They moved to Burundi in 2011 and saw that both injustice and poor farming practices permeated the country's coffee industry. They also saw that roasters around the world had a hard time getting consistently good coffee from Burundi. In an effort to see positive change in both farmers’ and roasters’ lives, Long Miles Coffee was born.

Previously we’ve only bought coffee from them from Burundi, but since two years ago they’ve also started a project in Kenya. 2020 they were able to visit and connect with a community of coffee growers in Kirinyaga County who are committed to producing high quality Kenyan coffee. This past year they had one full time employee offering year-round agronomical support to the producers who have agreed to let Long Miles produce their coffee for them. Last year, their first in operation, they worked with 25 farming families. This year they exceeded 300 families who delivered their cherries to Long Miles washing station; the refurbished Njowa Coffee Factory in Kirinyaga County, Mount Kenya (just east of Nyeri County).

The coffee cherries were divided into three different lots, designated geographically by river boundaries: Karinga, Nyamindi, and Kamweti. These distinct lots were processed separately. This is unique to the Long Miles station as nearly everywhere else in Kenya, the coffee is simply bulked together and sold under the station name.

In addition to producing coffee, Long Miles is working on a number of reforestation initiatives. This is important as it connects coffee and the producers they are working with, to a larger work in the area: planting fruit and nut bearing trees, providing shade, protecting soil, and capturing carbon - all in ways that brings money into the communities producing coffee.
