DIRECT TRADE

We want more people to be able to drink really good and sustainable coffee and we are convinced that the road to get there is based on transparency throughout the value chain.

To get there, we need to shed light on and meet the conditions that exists. A clear way for us to further contribute to this transparency is by defining out Direct Trade work.

All our coffee is bought with the same philosophy, and we strive to create even closer relationships with our producers. Together with them, we evaluate our coffee, make plans for the future and ensure to strengthen each other´s business models.

Therefore, we have chosen to add a level to our purchasing philosophy by adding two additional criteria to define Direct Trade coffees, these being; long term & close relationships.

OUR DIRECT TRADE CRITERIA

1. LONG TERM

In order for us to label a coffee with Direct Trade, we must have bought coffee from the producer for at least 3 consecutive years. Many can deliver on one successful harvest, two years in a row could be luck, but after three years you usually know if you have found a quality partner.

We prefer to buy as much coffee as possible from as few producers as possible. This does not mean that we do not want to buy a lot of coffee from many - it would be ideal. What we do mean is that we would rather build strong relationships with the partners we have, than buy one lot from time to time from several.

We often buy coffee long before harvest so that both we and the producer feel secure regarding price, volume and quality. This contributes to a secure income for producers, which also allows them to invest more in their companies to continue to increase their quality.

2. CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS

We have a tight dialogue with our producers, know where the coffee comes and its journey to our roastery. As we all become more digital, we have a different relationship with our producers and thanks to all the different communication channels, we have a good insight into each other's everyday lives.

This does not mean that we have no intermediaries, in some cases we have intermediaries. This could mean an export partner that allows us to have a dialogue directly with small farmers in, for example, Colombia or Ethiopia.

As we all know, digital cannot 100% replace meeting face-to-face, so we make sure to visit our main producers regularly.

DIRECT TRADE WITH

FAF COFFEES

We purchased our first coffee from FAF coffees in 2010 and our ‘Brazil Fortaleza’ har been a beloved favourite in our assortment since 2013. We buy about 38 tonnes of coffee yearly. That fills up 2 whole containers, and to put it into perspective is is 640 bags of green coffee. We buy many different lots and use them not only for our Seasonal Origin and Limited Edition coffees but also as a part of some of our brew and espresso blends.

DIRECT TRADE WITH

LONG MILES COFFEE

We at J&N are proud to have bought coffee from Long Miles Coffee in Burundi since 2014. When founders Ben & Kristy Carlson moved to Burundi in 2011, they saw both injustices and poor agricultural practices that dominated the country's coffee industry. They also saw that roasteries around the world had a hard time getting consistently good coffee from Burundi. As an initiative for positive change for both farmers and coffee roasters, the Long Miles Coffee Project was born.

DIRECT TRADE WITH

THE MENENDEZ FAMILY

DIRECT TRADE WITH

LUIS Balladarez

DIRECT TRADE WITH

GRACIANO CRUZ
