SUSTAINABILITY & DIRECT TRADE
Sustainability – a certainty
SUSTAINABILITY AT EVERY STAGE
The absolute most important thing for us is that coffee production is sustainable, all the way. It starts with the plant, which thrives in fertile and nutrient-rich soil, surrounded by diverse vegetation. In short, it's a nature that grows and lives freely, not dictated by mass production. Those who truly understand this, who know their environment and coffee cultivation, are our producers. Individuals who, just like us, share the passion for coffee that grows, harvested, and is processed with love!
Bags filled with the finest green coffee arrive at our facility in Länna, where we take on the responsibility for sustainable and gentle treatment. Our roasters are powered by biogas, and we utilize hydropower in production – small but vital steps to minimize our footprint. Even the final step, the delivery to our customers, is done in partnership with a company that offsets 100% of the carbon footprint.
We care about our planet and collaborate with producers and partners who share the same values. Now and always!

Verified by a third party
Enveritas
We know that we buy coffee in a responsible way, trust our producers, and feel that our customers trust us. However, we still want to have it verified by an independent third party.
Enveritas is a non-profit organization (NPO) that works with coffee producers worldwide. Their mission is to shed light on and improve their conditions and livelihoods while advocating for sustainability in the coffee industry – two aspects that go hand in hand. Their work is based on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is funded by us – the roaster – the individual coffee farmer does not need to pay anything. Enveritas also identifies and highlights gaps in the various certifications that exist in the coffee industry today.
In addition to working directly with farmers, Enveritas provides assistance to buyers and roasters in finding coffee that has been sustainably and ethically grown – this part is called Enveritas Verified. It's beneficial for anyone who wants to contribute to a better world!
CLOSE RELATIONS
DIRECT TRADE
We want more people to enjoy truly delicious and sustainable coffee, and we firmly believe that the path to achieving this lies in transparency throughout the entire value chain – from the coffee plant to the cup. To get there, we must assess the current conditions and address and improve them whenever possible. And that's exactly what we do. By purchasing directly from the producers, we ensure that everything is done right – there are no intermediaries causing unclear information.
But we don't stop there! In addition to transparency and clarity, we have added two more criteria for us to brand our coffee as Direct Trade: long-term commitment and close relationships. Together with our Direct Trade producers, we evaluate the coffee, plan for the future, and strengthen both our own and each other's businesses. Together, we become better!
DIRECT TRADE
PROJECTS
The way we work, side by side with our producers, creates a genuine interest and commitment that we truly appreciate. And it's mutual.
There are numerous ongoing projects, all aimed at improving the present and securing the future. Of course, all these projects depend on us and others buying coffee from the farms, but we have also chosen to provide extra support to some of them. Some projects span over a long period, while others are specific and time-limited campaigns.
What makes this even more special is that our customers can also contribute by purchasing and enjoying the coffee, where a portion of the proceeds directly goes to the projects. Everyone can make a difference!
J&N x FAF Coffees
LET THE BIRDS SING
The Bobolink is a small, finch-like bird that spends its winters in South America. As the metallic, bubbling chant that forms its song became increasingly rare, coffee farmers felt the need to take action – deforestation for coffee cultivation (among other reasons) was stealing the bird's habitat. This is where the Bob-o-link project began.
A small sub-project within this extensive, long-term initiative is "For a healthy soil," which we run in collaboration with FAF Coffees. The funds go towards agronomists who work on-site, assisting Bob-o-link producers in maintaining fertile and healthy soil over time. The goal is to reduce reliance on artificial fertilizers and instead find more efficient and sustainable methods to work with the land. The agronomists develop individual plans with each producer, and these plans are evaluated annually.
In addition to an initial sum to kick-start the project, a portion of 5 SEK per kilo of our Bob-o-Link espresso sold always goes towards this project.
J&N x LONG MILES COFFEE
SOLAR CELLS FOR CHRISTMAS
The Christmas project of 2022 was to collaborate with Long Miles Coffee in Burundi to install solar panels on the roofs of their washing stations to ensure essential electricity supply. During the day, workers pick the coffee cherries, and when the evening shift takes over at the washing station, it gets dark. In addition to lighting, energy is needed for water pumps, separation machines, and other equipment – much of the operation depends on electricity.
Previously, all the electricity came from diesel generators, and acquiring diesel was difficult, time-consuming, unreliable, and expensive. Instead, harnessing solar energy is a win for everyone, including the environment.
"Light is coming!" was the joyful and spontaneous comment from our friends and producers in Burundi when they received the Christmas gift from Johan & Nyström. With 20 SEK per kilo Christmas coffee we sold, and an additional gift from us, the total amounted to 80,000 SEK, and the solar panels are now in place! The old diesel containers? They are sitting in a corner collecting dust.
